A sequel to the movie is being worked on right now.

It is the clash of legends that occurs in "Godzilla vs. Kong" when two mythical rivals engage in a magnificent conflict that has the potential to change the course of history. During their treacherous trip to uncover Kong's actual home, he and his guards are accompanied by Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom he has established an unusual and deep attachment. A raging Godzilla, however, suddenly places them in the way of the heroes, causing widespread devastation around the planet. There is a secret that lurks deep beneath the center of the Earth, and it begins with the epic battle between two titans, which was sparked by invisible powers and is just the beginning of the story.

Godzilla and Kong are the only live Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla battled and destroyed his alien adversary Ghidorah for dominion in 2019. Skull Island's climate has become unstable as a result of Ghidorah's storm combining with the storm cell that is always surrounding the island, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with the help of an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language.

But when Jia comes to pay Kong a visit and holds out a doll to him, the Titan, knowing that Kong is stuck within the biodome, discovers this and instantly tosses a tree at the doll, killing her.

Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with the idea of using Kong as their navigator to lead them to the energy source because Skull Island can no longer contain him and allow him to survive (because Kong has grown too large). Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was transferred off Skull Island, she eventually agrees when Nathan convinces her that they must undertake this mission in order to end Godzilla's rampage and to find Kong a new home.

It's Maia, Walter's daughter. Maia, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia are all on board a modified barge with a lightly sedated Kong chained up to keep him from getting away. One rainy night, Kong gets agitated and restless. Jia calms him down by letting her and Kong touch fingers in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The next day, Ilene tells Nathan about how she raised Jia as her own daughter after dangerous and unpredictable storms wiped out most of the Iwi and her parents. Jia was the only survivor because Kong was the one who kept her safe, which led to the two forming a bond.

The Titan comes and assaults the soldiers before capsizing the barge, almost drowning Kong and the others onboard. In the end, Nathan frees Kong by releasing his shackles, enabling him to fight Godzilla beneath long enough to swim up to the surface and overturn the barge, rescuing the passengers from drowning. Kong goes onto a neighboring aircraft ship to meet Godzilla. After a brutal encounter, fighter aircraft distract Godzilla sufficiently for Kong to force him back into the sea. To avoid the atomic detonation, Kong leaps off the copyright, but Godzilla wraps his tail around him and pulls him into the water, aiming to drown the Titan.

With no other choice, Nathan chooses to disable all the ships' power to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong vanquished. He swims away, satisfied with his victory, after examining the wrecked fleet. As they prepare to restart the ships, the crew decides to fly Kong to an Antarctica entrance site for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was initially frozen. Jia explains to Kong that his home is beyond the door, but he refuses to walk through it.

Nathan inquires as to whether Kong would go down the tube if there are others like him if they are unable to return him to Skull Island due to the cold. Ilene responds that he would. Ilene encourages Jia to inquire as to whether Kong's family is present in the area.

Meanwhile, Madison and Josh come into Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry since they suspect Apex is to blame for Godzilla's behavior shift. They slip inside the devastated Apex headquarters together, only to discover that the "eye" Bernie mentioned earlier has vanished. As they find a hidden facility deep down, the gang is mistakenly trapped and carried via an underground conduit to Hong Kong in an antigravity transport vehicle transporting Skullcrawler eggs.

The three disembark and find themselves inside a vast black cavern, where they come face to face with Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla operated by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's top technological officer Ren Serizawa. Walter throws a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the chamber to test Mechagodzilla's strength against the Titans as soon as the mecha is activated. The Skullcrawler is on the brink of attacking Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is captured and detained by Mechagodzilla, who uses a tremendous red energy beam to slice the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, owing to power supply limits, the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down shortly thereafter.

Walter plans to use the Hollow Earth's energies to defeat Mechagodzilla. He and the Titans are being replaced by humans, which is why Apex is attacking Godzilla. After Apex acquired the severed head of Ghidorah from Alan Jonah five years ago, Ren is sitting within it, controlling Mechagodzilla through radio waves.

There, Godzilla enters the center of the city and, recognizing Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, uses his atomic breath to bore a tunnel through the biosphere, collapsing the temple. Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks while Maia and her team attempt to flee in their HEAV, but Kong grabs it on their way out and, despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to escape, instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to ensure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan are not inside, killing Maia and her personnel.

Kong and Godzilla both recover and get back to their feet, with Godzilla searching for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself on a skyscraper. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold intending to strangle him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury against Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong subdued and pinned down, Godzilla furiously roars at his opponent in a show of dominance, but Kong, defeated, angrily roars in defiance against Godzilla.

Walter instructs Ren to send out Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla back at the Apex headquarters. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, Walter dismisses Ren's pleas and tells him to activate the mecha. At the same time, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for penetrating Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison blames Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused all of this to begin with, yet he boldly responds that he took responsibility for allowing humans to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.

When the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks affect Mechagodzilla, the robot goes berserk, murdering Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren when Walter's back is turned while he talks about his invention. Ghidorah's mind has now taken control of Mechagodzilla, which escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and attacks the city before Godzilla can stop it. Prior to engaging Godzilla, Mechagodzilla launches a salvo of missiles at its biological counterpart to close the gap.

After waking up, Kong sees the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his opponent. Though Kong first does not believe her as he continues to witness Godzilla being annihilated by Mechagodzilla, Jia eventually convinces him that the robot is the "real" adversary, not Godzilla. After a brief moment of hesitation, Kong agrees and sets aside his animosity before marching into combat to assist Godzilla while repairing his dislocated arm.

The two Titans succeed in reversing the tide, but the robot is much more powerful than they are. When Kong reclaims his axe from the debris after losing it during his previous struggle with Godzilla, the robot tries to mortally impale Kong with its tail drill. Mechagodzilla's weapon, having lost its charge, is ineffectual against Kong. Bernie, understanding that there is nothing he and the others can do, suggests that they all take a drink. Godzilla and Kong had time to regroup and take the upper hand when Josh grabbed Bernie's flask from him and poured its contents all over the control panel, short-circuiting the machine and allowing Godzilla a chance to recuperate.

Kong sees Godzilla holding his axe and uses his atomic breath to accelerate it, allowing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb by limb and remove its head before holding up his trophy and relaxing.

Monarch has constructed an observation station in the Hollow Earth at some point in the future. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia are out on a morning stroll with Kong when they happen to see him pass by. After signing "home" to Jia, Kong leaps to the edge of a cliff, pounding his chest and roaring, proclaiming himself as the king of the Hollow Earth and joyfully accepting it as his new home and realm.

According to the site's summary of audience evaluations, "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects." Indeed, although critics lauded the film's monster brawling, others voiced displeasure with the film's "half-baked" human aspect. The picture was credited with putting a stop to a box office slump fueled by the COVID-19 outbreak, earning an estimated $48.5 million dollars in the United States by Sunday morning of the five-day weekend release period. WarnerMedia did not reveal viewership figures for the film's performance on HBO Max, but noted that it was a picture that fans watched several times and had a bigger viewership than any series or feature published on the service since its inception. Additionally, the picture grossed an estimated $236 million in non-U.S. markets.

On April 17, 2021, it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong had eclipsed the overall box office receipts of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, despite the fact that box office receipts were still slightly reduced as a result of the epidemic.

Since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, this is the first time Godzilla and King Kong have featured in the same film in 59 years.

The location where Mechagodzilla is stationed, which is subterranean and topped by a pyramid, is reminiscent of the Central Dogma, which is also underground and topped by a pyramid.
